Part 2 of our conversation with Aldie and Derk of boardgamegeek.com; and Richard Borg, designer of Memoir 44, Commands & Colors, and Liar's Dice.  This time we continue our discussion of the Spiel des Jahres (Germany's Game of the Year award), but discussing the Recommended list, then Derk continues his discussions about the industry and we wind up talking about BGG.

Enjoy!

I think it's a bit strange that among gaming hobbyists/experts that there was so much confusion and consternation about the SdJ and the nominations this year. As far as I know, the award has always been for games that have been published in Germany in the last year. Neither Roll Through the Ages nor Dixit was published in Germany last year. The fact that RttA was published in the US in 2009 and Dixit was published in France in 2009 has no relevance to these games being *eligible* for the SdJ in 2010, after having secured publishers in Germany last year.

I think it's unfortunate that the discussion seemed to return repeatedly to the failings of the SdJ, and on what the SdJ is not rather than on what it is. While the SdJ has morphed over the years, in the recent past the award has rewarded mass-market, family-friendly games. With that in mind, I think the jury has done a terrific job of selecting the nominees and winners. Perhaps a more positive discussion might have touched more on what the significance of the nominees were in the greater context of the hobby (e.g. game design moving to a more international stage, weak year for German designers, etc.)

Thanks for the weekly podcasts Doug! Love them all, even when I don't always see eye to eye with the round table (which is exceedingly rare).

Thanks for the comments Jasen.  You make a good point about eligibility.  I think (as has been said elsewhere), that after the SdJ was given to Settlers, El Grande, Mississippi Queen, Elfenland, Tikal and Torres in successive years, we gamers took it as a marker for the hobby.  The SdJ has changed, but we still expect the same results from it every year.

    Glad you're listening!
